"Through play children can extend themselves beyond the real world in which they often feel powerless into a world in which they can experience the pleasure of exercising their power of mastery. In doing so, they are often able to reduce conflicts in their lives, to compensate for unpleasant experiences by 'undoing' them and playing them out with happier endings and by taking revenge on reality" (Hughes, 1985, pp. 87)
